PocketMap Navigator R3
...I've been using a Pocket PC for some time now to handle scheduling, mobile
e-mail and even Web browsing, but I recently came across an application by
Space Machine, Inc. of Sunnyvale, Calif. That allows me to use my iPAQ as a
portable GPS unit and at a fraction of the cost of some of the pricy stand-alone
navigation units on the market.
PocketMap Navigator, Release 3, is one of the slickest applications I
have run across in some time. You can buy the software alone for around
$90 if you already have a GPS receiver or get the software and a mounting cradle
with built-in GPS receiver for $229. The cradle attaches to your windshield and
has an amplified speaker and power connector for your particular Pocket PC.

PocketMap Navigator R3.11
Pocket Map Navigator may well be one of the more cost effective GPS software solutions on
the market, but its performance makes it one of the best I have used.
To start out, you get a software packet with 3 CDs and your registration code. There
also is a short users guide that walks you through the software install and installing
different types of GPS systems (CF, BT, Mouse, etc.).
The software install is very easy, you put the first disk in, it asks you for the serial,
you put it in and it installs the program for your PC. You also have the option to install
maps for select areas to your hard drive during the setup. (this is not required as you can
later insert disks to get the maps). The PC program is used to put maps on your PPC or storage
cards for use in your PPC. The install also installs the program on your Pocket PC.

Space Machine PocketMap Navigator
This Christmas, GPS was a hot seller and found itself under many trees to make for a special
morning for many of you out there. But, if you were not one of those fortunate people and are
in need of a great GPS unit for your PocketPC, then we have some news for you. Actually two
pieces of news.
First, MyPalmLife welcomes to the fold of our Palm world, the PocketPC. With the consolidation
of companies, both in the Palm and Microsoft OS realm, we’ve decided to add the PocketPC to our mix.
Second, Space Machine is not a new name in this fast becoming crowded world of GPS solutions.
Based in Sunnyvale, just a stones throw (well, a long hard throw) from NASA’s Moffet Field,
Space Machine has been giving the PocketPC world a GPS alternative to the others for nearly
five years. Concentrating on the software aspect of this new exciting field of
getting-you-there-in-one-piece, Space Machine’s PocketMap Navigator may just be the GPS to
have on your PocketPC.

PMN is currently the best navigation PPC software
that I've used (others include Destinator and Mapopolis). I have completely switched from Destinator
to using PMN. It's the first software package that I tried that I don't really have any major
complaints about. And for $80 it's also the cheapest. Space Machine did an incredible job designing
this tool and if they keep on working on it as they are it is for sure the best investment in a GPS
navigation software package.

Every once in a while you get your hands
on a piece of software that when you run it you know that the developers "got it." PocketMap Navigator
2004, R3.0 is one of those packages! The developers at Space Machine clearly understand the importance
of speed, functionality and ease-of-use. The user interface is the best I have seen...

...The interface is very straightforward and
easy-to-use. While there are several different screens, most of the action takes place in the main (map)
screen; all of the program's menu choices are accessible from the bottom of this screen. The maps, while
generally very accurate, are not particularly attractive. The colors used to represent streets, parks, and
so forth are completely configurable but Mapopolis doesn't use recognizable icons to represent Interstate
or U.S. highways. This can make it difficult to identify major roadways on the map, especially when driving.
The highway designations appear in the same font used to label street names. While major roads can be
configured to be a different color, major roads and streets are sometimes indistinguishable from minor
ones.
The program loads and runs quickly. Re-routing is fast and generally accurate. Creating new routes is fairly
simple, and the routine process offers a "Current GPS position" as a menu option for the origin point. Favorite
destinations can be saved for later use. The route appears on the screen in a user-selectable color, but it
can be difficult to see at times. There is no "auto-zoom" feature for turns and maneuvers.

...Driving Directions can be accessed from the
main screen and is a text version of the turn-by-turn instructions with icons indicating various maneuvers.
You also get additional trip information such as how many turns, miles and ETA. To see the map, you need to
go to the Navigate screen. If you have a route planned, the Navigation will mark your route on the map and
track your movements. You will hear the voice guidance giving you turn-by-turn driving instructions. If you
missed your turn, the PocketMap Navigator will make a sound alert and re-route automatically and give you
new driving directions. The re-route process is fairly quick in our test. The Navigate screen also offers
additional visual aids such as shortcut buttons for reverse the route, next maneuver, etc, and icons such
as Countdown for number of voice guidance messages left before the next turn...

PMN is a very good program with many distinguishing
factors. I like the desktop planning function, quick switching between day and night view, the see-through
navigation console, the great POI database (you can select categories you want to view on the map), the
quick routing function, and the automatic location centering. I love the fact that you get all the maps
on CD and don't have to spend the time downloading the map data...
Their customer service is amazing and responsive. It wasn't only me that received great service as I have
read in several online forums. The price is $20 less than Mapopolis and you receive the CDs with the program
and all the map data. You really can't go wrong with the product and they work hard to keep it updated and
improving all the time.

...Starting with R2.10 this has reached new levels.
Prior to that, it was a bit of a mixed bag because while the overall UI was very well thought out and convenient
(top bar with icons for each function, i.e. settings, planning, direction and navigation) the overall operation
was slow, mainly because of the map redraws that take anywhere between 2s and 8s. With R2.10 this is no longer
a problem with overall speed being on par with other programs. They apparently use an efficient caching technology
and a modified display method. Regardless, it works very well! Kudos for fixing that.
There is even a dedicated PocketMap forum hosted on the Gps Passion website...
